Student Opportunities

The Governor’s Scholars Program is a summer residential program for outstanding juniors in Kentucky. Selection for the program is highly competitive, with an application process similar to that of prestigious colleges and universities. 

There are several parts to the GSP applications and students are encouraged to start the application process as early as possible, and have an several people review the documents before submission. 

Governor's Scholar are often offered scholarships based on their selection into the program.

Kentucky teens with an entrepreneurial spirit are selected for this three-week residential program that immerses students in a creative space and supplies them with the tools needed to unleash their innate entrepreneurial spirits.  During the program, motivated teams of high school students develop a business model, design a prototype, and pitch their startup to a large audience and panel of judges.

This is a great program for inventive, creative students.

The Governor's School for the Arts is a summer program for current sophomores, or juniors, living in the state of Kentucky that have an extraordinary talent in a performing area such as art, drama, music, and writing.    

This program is competitive, and the process requires both an application and an audition.

Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership is an organization dedicated to "training and nurturing the young leaders of tomorrow."

The staff selects sophomores (one boy and one girl) to represent Madison Southern during a 3 to 4 day seminar at a local college. The seminar is usually held in late May or early June.

At the end of the sophomore year, students receiving gifted education services are invited to apply for Youth Leadership Madison County. 

This leadership program for gifted and talented students in their junior year, is intended to promote the positive aspects of leadership and community involvement by providing young adults with informal educational experiences  in the areas of Economy, Arts/ Entertainment, Government, and Health/Wellness. 

Being a member of the Madison County Youth Leadership program is an excellent addition to a high school resume.

The Superintendent Teen Task Force is comprised of students representing the junior and senior classes of each high school who meet monthly to experience interactive student leadership training and to discuss the issues relevant to students in Madison County. 

Students can apply for the Task Force by completing an application available through the counseling office.  Application are available at the beginning of the school year. 

It is great honor for our students to be selected for this program, and is an excellent additional to a high school resume. 

The Office of Congressman Andy Barr is seeking high school juniors and seniors to apply for the Sixth Congressional District’s Youth Ambassador Leadership Conference. The Youth Ambassador Leadership Conference is a non-partisan, educational experience designed for high school students that provides a unique opportunity to learn about leadership from leaders across Kentucky while serving as an ambassador for their school.

The program will consist of participation and discussions with top Commonwealth leaders in the areas of government, education, and business.  The one day conference will last for approximately 4-5 hours and be will held in or near Lexington. It will include a program consisting of a dynamic panel discussion on leadership and  the opportunity to engage with panel members and each other  in individual interactive breakout sessions.

This program honors high school juniors  who maintain a high scholastic average and have demonstrated leadership ability.  When selected, a student is photographed by Holifield's Photography and a display of the student travels throughout the school and community. 

Scholarships are also available for participants of this program.
